Nickel 200 – UNS N02200
Commercially pure nickel (≥ 99.0% Ni)
Commercially pure wrought nickel, with high thermal and electrical conductivity and excellent resistance to caustic soda and other alkalis, neutral salts and dry fluorine. It is ferromagnetic. Limited to ~315 °C: above that, carbon precipitates as graphite at the grain boundaries, and Nickel 201 (low C) must be used.

Heat treatment, welding and machining
| Item | Usual practice |
|---|---|
| Service temperature | Up to ~315 °C. Above that, use Nickel 201 (risk of intergranular graphitization). |
| Heat treatment | Annealing at ≈ 705 – 870 °C, controlling time and temperature to avoid grain growth. Air or water cooling. Not hardenable by heat treatment. |
| Welding | Good weldability. Consumables: AWS A5.14 ERNi-1 (FM 61 type) and AWS A5.11 ENi-1 (141 type). Rigorous cleaning: sulfur and lead cause cracking. |
| Machining | 'Gummy' material in the annealed condition; machines better in the cold-worked condition. Use a sharp, positive-rake tool. |

Typical applications
- Evaporators and piping for caustic soda (NaOH)
- Food and synthetic fiber processing
- Handling of fluorine and anhydrous HF
- Electronic components, terminals and batteries
- Anodes and cathodes in electrolysis
- Tanks for chemical transport
Alternatives: Nickel 201 above 315 °C or in hot concentrated caustic soda; Monel 400 for seawater and HF with more mechanical strength; Inconel 600 when sulfur or hot oxidation is present.
Nickel 200: complete guide
What Nickel 200 is
Nickel 200 belongs to the family of nickel alloys as its simplest member: commercially pure nickel, with at least 99% nickel and small amounts of carbon, manganese, iron, silicon and copper. It is ductile, tough, ferromagnetic up to about 360 °C and hardens only by cold work. Its valuable property is resistance to caustic soda and fluorine, which no more highly alloyed grade matches.
Nickel 200 and Nickel 201
The carbon of up to 0.15% in Nickel 200 precipitates as graphite in prolonged exposures above about 315 °C, embrittling the material; that is why the use of 200 is limited to that temperature. For service above 315 °C, Nickel 201 is specified, with carbon up to 0.02%; commercial material is usually dual certified 200 / 201.
Corrosion and limits of use
Nickel 200 resists sodium and potassium hydroxide in all concentrations, including molten, fluorine, anhydrous hydrofluoric acid and fluorides, neutral and reducing media, fresh water and flowing seawater. It is limited in oxidizing media such as nitric acid and ferric chloride, in stagnant seawater and in aerated ammoniacal solutions. For seawater and aqueous hydrofluoric acid, Monel 400 is the usual choice; when sulfur or hot oxidation is present, Inconel 600.
Applications
Caustic soda and potash evaporators, tanks and piping, reactors and equipment for fluorine and fluoride production, synthetic fiber production components, food processing equipment, electronic and electrochemical components, and aerospace and defense parts that require pure nickel.
Supply forms and Dustre services
