Materials welded with ERNiCr-3
Dissimilar joints: The classic joint between carbon or Cr-Mo steel and austenitic stainless at elevated temperature, where the intermediate expansion coefficient and low carbon diffusion outperform ER309L. Also used to join nickel 200, nickel alloys and stainless steels to each other, and on A-286 when strength equivalent to the aged base metal is not required.
Why the composition differs from the base metal
Compared with alloy 600, the wire carries about 3 % manganese and 2.5 % niobium. Manganese ties up sulfur, and niobium forms carbides and changes solidification, which makes the bead much less sensitive to hot cracking, especially when there is dilution with iron in dissimilar joints.
Welding precautions
- No preheating for nickel alloys; when joining to carbon or Cr-Mo steel, follow the preheat required by the steel.
- The nickel alloy pool is viscous and penetrates little: use a wider bevel, a smaller root face and place the wire at the edge of the pool.
- TIG with pure argon or argon-helium; argon root purge. Rigorous cleaning: oil, paint and markers contaminate the nickel alloy with sulfur and lead.
