EN 10204 3.1 certificate: what it must contain and how to check it
EN 10204 defines the types of inspection documents for metallic products. 3.1 is the most requested in industry: it reports the test results of the actual lot, validated by the manufacturer's inspection.
Document types
| Type | Document | Results | Validated by |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.1 | Declaration of compliance | No test results | Manufacturer |
| 2.2 | Test report | Non-specific test results (typical production) | Manufacturer |
| 3.1 | Inspection certificate | Results of the actual lot or heat | Manufacturer's inspection representative, independent of production |
| 3.2 | Inspection certificate | Results of the actual lot, witnessed | Manufacturer's inspection and the purchaser's or a third-party inspector |
Checklist for a 3.1
- Certificate number, manufacturer and date.
- Correct standard and grade (e.g. ASTM A182 F51), with the revision when required.
- Heat number matching the marking stamped on the part.
- Form, dimensions and quantity as ordered.
- Chemical composition within the limits of the standard.
- Tensile, hardness and Charpy (with the test temperature) when required.
- Heat treatment: temperature, time and cooling medium.
- Extra order requirements: NDT, PMI, NACE MR0175, intermetallic phase test in duplex (ASTM A923).
- Identification and signature of the inspection representative.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between 3.1 and 3.2?
In 3.1 the validation is done by the manufacturer's own inspection. In 3.2 an inspector from the purchaser or a certification body witnesses the tests and also signs. 3.2 costs more and takes longer; request it only when the specification requires it.
Does the certificate accompany a cut or machined part?
Yes. Dustre keeps traceability by heat from the stock material to the part, and its own laboratory can test the lot when the order requires.
