Austenitic stainless steels

Austenitics are the largest stainless family: chromium and nickel in a face-centered cubic structure, non-magnetic, weldable and ductile from cryogenic temperatures up to about 800 °C.

About austenitic stainless steels

The classic composition is 18 % chromium and 8 % nickel (304). Adding molybdenum gives 316 and 317, for chlorides; titanium or niobium stabilize 321 and 347 against sensitization at high temperature; more chromium and nickel give 310, for furnaces; and more molybdenum, nickel and nitrogen form the super austenitics 904L and 254 SMO, for acids and seawater, which have their own page.

They do not harden by heat treatment, only by cold work. The standard treatment is solution annealing, which dissolves carbides and restores corrosion resistance after forging or welding.

Frequently asked questions

Why is austenitic stainless not magnetic?

The austenitic (FCC) structure is not ferromagnetic. After heavy cold work part of it turns into martensite and the part may slightly attract a magnet; this does not indicate the wrong material.

When to use 321 or 347 instead of 316L?

In continuous service between 425 and 850 °C: titanium (321) and niobium (347) tie up the carbon and prevent chromium carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries.
