Plate bending

We bend laser- or waterjet-cut plates to form profiles, angles, boxes and fabrication parts.

Materials

Austenitic, duplex and super duplex stainlessNickel alloys and titaniumCarbon, Cr-Mo and alloy steels

Capacity, maximum dimensions and lead time on request: send the drawing. See alloys in stock.

How bending works

On the press brake, the plate rests on a V die and the punch comes down, forcing the plate to bend to the programmed angle. The final angle depends on the punch stroke, the die opening and the springback of the material, which is greater in stainless and high-strength alloys.

Minimum radius and rolling direction

Each material and thickness has a minimum inside radius below which the outer face of the bend cracks. Duplex, high-strength alloys and thick plates call for larger radii. When possible, the bend is made transverse to the rolling direction of the plate, which has more ductility.

From cut plate to welded part

Bending usually comes after laser or waterjet cutting and before welding. The flat pattern takes the bend factor of the material into account so that the bent part comes out to size.

What to send with a quote request

Send the drawing with angles and inside radii, the alloy, the thickness, the length of the bends and the quantity. If you have the flat pattern file, send it as well.

Frequently asked questions

Can duplex and super duplex plate be bent?

Yes, with larger inside radii than austenitic stainless and more force on the press brake, because duplex has a higher yield strength. The minimum radius is confirmed by the thickness and the plate standard.

What is the difference between bending and rolling?

Bending forms corners at defined points of the plate; rolling curves the plate continuously to form cylinders and segments.

Does Dustre perform this service on customer-supplied material?

Yes, as long as the alloy and the specification are defined. We can also supply the material from our stock, with EN 10204 3.1 certificate.
