Materials welded with ER317L
Why the composition differs from the base metal
Molybdenum segregates during solidification and leaves depleted regions between the dendrites. ER317L has the same Mo range as the base metal (3.0–4.0 %), so the bead may be slightly less pitting resistant than the plate. When that matters, an over-alloyed consumable is used, such as ER317LMn or a nickel alloy (ERNiCrMo-3).
Welding precautions
- No preheating; interpass up to 150 °C.
- Low to moderate heat input to limit Mo segregation.
- TIG shielding with pure argon; in MIG/MAG use argon with 1–2 % O2 or 2–3 % CO2. Argon root purge in tubes.
Frequently asked questions
What is ER317L used for?
Austenitic filler metal with 3–4 % molybdenum, indicated for 317L stainless and for welding 316L when more margin against pitting is wanted.
Why is the composition of ER317L different from the material it welds?
Molybdenum segregates during solidification and leaves depleted regions between the dendrites. ER317L has the same Mo range as the base metal (3.0–4.0 %), so the bead may be slightly less pitting resistant than the plate. When that matters, an over-alloyed consumable is used, such as ER317LMn or a nickel alloy (ERNiCrMo-3).
Which covered electrode corresponds to ER317L?
E317L-16/-17 – AWS A5.4.
What precautions apply when welding with ER317L?
No preheating; interpass up to 150 °C. Low to moderate heat input to limit Mo segregation. TIG shielding with pure argon; in MIG/MAG use argon with 1–2 % O2 or 2–3 % CO2. Argon root purge in tubes.
