- Incoloy 825
- ASTM A522 Type I
- 904L stainless steel

Dissimilar joints: Widely used in joints of carbon or Cr-Mo steel with stainless, of stainless with nickel alloys, in cladding of carbon steel and on super-austenitics and super duplex when a bead nobler than the base metal is required.
Why the composition differs from the base metal
To weld 6 % Mo super-austenitics (such as 254) and Alloy 825, a filler metal much more highly alloyed than the plate is used. Molybdenum segregates in the bead and would leave depleted zones; starting from 9 % Mo in a nickel matrix, the bead is at least as pitting resistant as the base metal. On 9 % Ni steel, the choice is due to cryogenic toughness and a thermal expansion close to that of steel.
Welding precautions
- No preheating for nickel alloys and stainless; maximum interpass around 150 °C.
- The nickel alloy pool is viscous and penetrates little: use a wider bevel, a smaller root face and place the wire at the edge of the pool.
- TIG with pure argon or argon-helium; argon root purge. Rigorous cleaning: oil, paint and markers contaminate the nickel alloy with sulfur and lead.
- On 9 % Ni steel, control the residual magnetism of the part (arc blow) and keep the heat input low.
