Materials welded with ER410NiMo
Dissimilar joints: Also used in repairs of 431 stainless when a martensitic bead with good toughness is wanted.
Why the composition differs from the base metal
Chromium is slightly below the base metal and carbon is limited to 0.06 %. With 4–5 % nickel, this avoids delta ferrite in the bead and produces soft low-carbon martensite, tougher and less prone to cracking than an ordinary 13Cr deposit.
Welding precautions
- Preheat and interpass of about 100 to 150 °C (some sources indicate a 150 °C minimum on thick parts).
- PWHT typically between 580 and 620 °C; do not exceed about 620 °C, since above that reverted martensite re-hardens.
- Cool below about 100 °C before PWHT.
Frequently asked questions
What is ER410NiMo used for?
Low-carbon martensitic 12Cr-4.5Ni-0.5Mo filler metal, for 13Cr-4Ni steels such as F6NM and CA6NM, used in hydraulic turbines, pumps and valves.
Why is the composition of ER410NiMo different from the material it welds?
Chromium is slightly below the base metal and carbon is limited to 0.06 %. With 4–5 % nickel, this avoids delta ferrite in the bead and produces soft low-carbon martensite, tougher and less prone to cracking than an ordinary 13Cr deposit.
Which covered electrode corresponds to ER410NiMo?
E410NiMo-15/-16 – AWS A5.4.
What precautions apply when welding with ER410NiMo?
Preheat and interpass of about 100 to 150 °C (some sources indicate a 150 °C minimum on thick parts). PWHT typically between 580 and 620 °C; do not exceed about 620 °C, since above that reverted martensite re-hardens. Cool below about 100 °C before PWHT.
