Frequently asked questions

What are NPS and DN?

NPS (Nominal Pipe Size) is the nominal diameter in inches used in ASME standards. DN is the same nominal diameter in the metric system (ISO/EN): NPS 2 = DN 50. Neither is the actual dimension: the outside diameter is fixed per NPS and the inside diameter varies with wall thickness.

What is schedule (SCH)?

It is the wall thickness series. For the same NPS the outside diameter is the same and the wall grows with the schedule: SCH 10, 40, 80, 160. STD, XS and XXS are the old series (standard, extra strong, double extra strong).

What is the difference between SCH 40 and SCH 40S?

SCH 40S is the ASME B36.19M series for stainless steel. Up to NPS 10 it has the same wall as SCH 40; at NPS 12 the 40S is thinner (9.53 mm vs. 10.31 mm). The same applies to 80S vs. 80 from NPS 10.

Is STD the same as SCH 40?

Up to NPS 10, yes. Above that, STD stays fixed at 9.53 mm while SCH 40 keeps growing. XS equals SCH 80 up to NPS 8 and stays at 12.70 mm above that.
