Materials welded with ERNiFeCr-2
Why the composition differs from the base metal
It is one of the few cases where the wire has practically the same chemistry as the base metal, because the goal is for the bead to also precipitation harden (gamma double prime) during aging. The limits for C, Si, P, S and B are the same as alloy 718; control of solidification cracking and Laves phase in the bead comes from the procedure (low heat input and controlled interpass), not from a different chemistry.
Welding precautions
- Weld the part in the solution-treated condition; after welding, solution treat and age per the part specification to obtain strength close to the base metal.
- Low heat input and fast cooling limit niobium segregation (Laves phase).
- TIG with pure argon or argon-helium; argon root purge. Rigorous cleaning: oil, paint and markers contaminate the nickel alloy with sulfur and lead.
