Materials welded with ERNiCu-7
Dissimilar joints: Can join alloy 400 to carbon steel and to copper-nickel; for joints with stainless, ERNiCr-3 is usually preferred.
Why the composition differs from the base metal
The wire has about 2–3 % titanium, which alloy 400 does not have. Titanium deoxidizes and denitrifies the pool, preventing the porosity typical of Ni-Cu alloys. On K-500 the bead does not age like the base metal, so the joint ends up with the strength of alloy 400.
Welding precautions
- No preheating; interpass below 150 °C.
- On K-500, weld the solution-treated material and be aware that the weld does not reach the strength of the aged metal.
- TIG with pure argon or argon-helium; argon root purge. Rigorous cleaning: oil, paint and markers contaminate the nickel alloy with sulfur and lead.
Frequently asked questions
What is ERNiCu-7 used for?
Nickel-copper filler metal (about 65Ni-30Cu) with titanium, for welding alloy 400 and making joints or repairs on K-500, in seawater, hydrofluoric acid and brines.
Why is the composition of ERNiCu-7 different from the material it welds?
The wire has about 2–3 % titanium, which alloy 400 does not have. Titanium deoxidizes and denitrifies the pool, preventing the porosity typical of Ni-Cu alloys. On K-500 the bead does not age like the base metal, so the joint ends up with the strength of alloy 400.
Which covered electrode corresponds to ERNiCu-7?
ENiCu-7 – AWS A5.11.
What precautions apply when welding with ERNiCu-7?
