Materials welded with ER2209
Dissimilar joints: Indicated for joining duplex 2205 to 304L/316L stainless and to carbon steel.
Why the composition differs from the base metal
The wire has about 9 % Ni, versus 5–6 % in 2205. As the bead cools quickly, without the plate's solution annealing, it would tend to end up with too much ferrite; the extra nickel favors austenite and brings the balance closer to 50/50 between the phases.
Welding precautions
- Typical heat input of 0.5 to 2.5 kJ/mm and maximum interpass of 150 °C to avoid intermetallic phases.
- TIG with pure argon or argon with up to 2 % N2; purge with argon or argon-nitrogen.
- Do not weld the root autogenously (without wire): the bead becomes excessively ferritic.
- Normally there is no preheating or PWHT.
