Materials welded with ER209
Why the composition differs from the base metal
The wire repeats the concept of the base metal (Mn and N in place of part of the Ni), but with ranges adjusted so that the nitrogen stays in the bead without causing porosity. The deposit thus keeps a mechanical strength close to that of the bar, which a 316L would not give.
Welding precautions
- No preheating; interpass up to 150 °C.
- Avoid gases with nitrogen or high CO2; use pure argon in TIG.
- Moderate heat input to preserve nitrogen and toughness.
